The two designers that I have chosen are Afzal Kahn and Franz Von Holzhausen. The reason I have chosen them is because each of the designers have affected my work in some way weather it’d the way one designer draws their lines or weather one designer uses colour in their sketches. These designers have similarities and differences that I will be exploring because each difference may have been responsible why their work is a certain way.
One similarity between them is that they’re both automotive designers, which means they’re responsible for the appearance of future automobiles for a manufacturer. From this I can infer that they both can draw a vehicle in different perspectives to show a client how the car will look when fully manufactured. However, Holzhausen works for Tesla, an electric car company, whereas Kahn is the founder of a car companies. This means that Holzhausen must follow a brief when designing the automobile as he doesn’t have full creative control compared to Kahn. An example of where a Kahn has full control of his design is when created his own car called The Vengeance which is based off the Aston Martin DB9. Kahn had completely changed the look of the car except for the shape of the grill. This means that he was able to make the car look however he wanted it to look. Holzhausen wouldn’t be able to do this which means he wouldn’t be able to fully do as he wishes when designing a car. For example, in the brief that Holzhausen may have been given when designing the Tesla Model S it may have said that he had a certain headlight shape which would to him having to work around this specific head light instead of making an original design that wouldn’t need altering too much if the headlight didn’t work well with the surrounding parts of the car.
Another similarity they share is that they both use colour as a tool to show how the body panels look on the car. This very useful when designing a car because if the colour is on a curved surface of the car it gives off a softer look and makes it look sleeker where as if the colour is on a surface that is meant to be sharp it makes the car look aggressive which is usually associated with supercars. One difference I found between their colouring method is that Holzhausen used colour to show how the paint work will look. I can infer this because his render is full of reflections which gives the impression of metallic paint. Kahn had used colour to show the curves of the body panels so that the viewer could distinguish how wide the rear of the car is compared to the front.
To conclude both designers can create innovative designs for the automotive industry. Although they share similarities and differences, they both able to create designs that can lead to new trend in design. I found both artist useful in inspiring my work for example I will be using Holzhausen’s use of colour to convey paint type and I will be using Kahn’s use of colour to show curves of my own sketches
