Franz Von Holzhausen

Holzhausen is an American designer, more specifically he is an automotive designer who specialises in turning concept designs into physical models. He is known for the design of the model S, model X, model 3 and the future tesla roadster (2020). before he was the chief of design for Tesla, he used to work for Mazda North America where he designed the Mazda Furai, which is another design he is known for.

Here are examples of sketches he produced when designing the Tesla Model S. The sketches show four initial drawings of the car, one coloured and detailed final design and one sketch of the interior. A 3-point perspective was used in these designs. This is done because a car is a 3D subject and when drawing a 3D object, the artist needs to convey length, width and height, which is successfully achieved in the sketches. Holzhausen has created a futuristic mood in his drawings by using quick lines that end with a rounded edge to make the car look fast and aerodynamic, which is a common aspect in newer cars. Another reason is his use of colour and white spaces. The primary colour of the car is blue, it’s the only colour used which gives off a clean aesthetic of the paint work. As well as this the shading and tone he uses makes the car look metallic and giving the impression of reflections from the body panels. The final aspect of this design that makes it look futuristic is that It includes white spaces. It gives off a premium and new look to the body of the car as it seems to imitate light bouncing from the car

As these are sketches not many materials have been used from what I can see a pen, paper and coloured markers (maybe Copic markers), which are common materials when drawing cars. From this design sheet I think that the viewer can understand that the design is of a future car and is able to infer that it may be an electric car, as car manufacturers are design cars that are able run off minimal fossil fuels.

To conclude, I like Holzhausen’s designs of Tesla Model S because the initial sketches are made of quick lines to show the rough shape of the car and shows that the design is of a faster car as it has been drawn with a low stance and with a low roof line. I also like his use of colour in his final design. By using one colour (blue) and white spaces it shows the curves of the car which shows that the car is designed to be aerodynamic. White spaces show that the paint is metallic because the white represents reflections. From this designer’s work I will attempt to create my own concept car by learning how to draw in this style and I will also use water colours to colour in the final design. I will be doing this because I need to be able to draw car parts in enough detail for individual parts can be seen by the viewer.
