Styrofoam And Clay Experiment

First, I drew out my basic motorcycle shape on a piece of Styrofoam I collected. After I switched on the hot wire machine, I cut the design out by following the lines I had made. I added a smaller section of Styrofoam on the top and cut out a seat shape. I then added clay around the Styrofoam, making sure to push the clay into the surface of the material so that it wouldn’t fall off. After the clay had slightly dried, I used a looped tool to carve out clay. I did this to add body lines and detail to the motorcycle like where vents would be. When the clay fully dried, I took a picture of it in the studio.

Problems

When carving and shaving away clay I would sometime take away too much clay. This meant that some Styrofoam was being exposed. To fix this issue I simple used water to attach clay back to the model. This was easy to do as the clay wasn’t completely dry. Another problem I found was when the model completely dried it cracked. I think this problem could be fixed by either painted to motorcycle or using vinyl to help the surface from drying out too much.

Conclusion

To conclude I found this material useful for creating body line and curse and I could use tools to take away small amounts of material in any direction. This would leave the surface with different amounts of depth. Another reason why I would use this material is because I would be able to fix mistake by adding clay to the section that needed altering.
